Misty answers questions from fans

Q: How do you get your back sets so high and nice? mine always spin wheni do them and i cant seem to get them to just glide right up?

MM: You might be over running the ball (you want to be able to set an outside set if you have too). Your back set body positioning should look exactly like your front set, you don’t want to give it away too early. If that happens then the block will just camp in front of your hitter. Also, make sure you are not cushioning too early with your wrists. The distance of the set comes from using your hips and wrists NOT by arching your back. Make sure your elbows stay wide and you form a nice triangle between both thumbs and index fingers. Finish your follow through even and extend your arms!!! I hope this helps.

Q: What other talents do you have besides volleyball?

Misty May: I don’t know what you consider talent. Is making people laugh one? I play other sports, and love to cook.

Q: Do you have any suggestions for being able to overhand serve?

MM: Make sure you stand parallel to the base line. For right handers, left leg forward. For lefties, right foot forward. It may look funny but you will be able to use your body to get the ball over the net. Form a fist with your contact hand. Hold the ball in the palm of your non-contact hand. Bend your legs. Now you just focus on watching your hand contact the ball. So as your arm strikes behind the ball, you follow through nice and solid. Your weight should finish primarily on your front leg. Once you get consistent then you just turn your body to where you want the ball to go and play with the different angles.

Q: What other sports have you played?

MM: Tennis, Basketball, Soccer, Swimming, Dance, Track, I even got to race a car (Long Beach Celebrity Grand Prix race), now I am taking up golf.

Yes, I’m interested in updates!

Okay so I’m doing a long writing report on you and I would like to know how you got the nickname turtle? It’s very interesting and it’d be a great piece of information to put in my report!

Thanks! -Claire

OMG i love whatching you play- i want to be like you when i grow up. i am in the 7th grade and play for my schools 8th grade AA team. We came in second in the championships, i also play synergy LV and CAVA. Do you have any advice from one player to another, ( i am only 5 ft 11 and 3/4 in). I whatched you on the dance competion you did, too bad that you hurt yourself. do you think that i could make it in the big league day, because a lot of people say i wont because of my hight, i reply… one day im going to grow and be taller than everyone. but the doc says that i wont grow very much. Could you give me some advice on how to improve my vertical?

Hey Misty May!! i have got to tell you that you are my IDOL! :D I am currently the varsity Libero at my school and i would like to know What are some techniques that you could tell me about Libero-ing? or some advise about being a Defensive specialist? i started playing volleyball since 6th grade and my mom cannot afford to pay for me to go to clubs or clinics so basically i have been teaching myself how to pass, set, hit,and everything else; with the help of my middle school and high school coaches too of course. My senior year is cumming up and i would really like to make the best of it so i would hopefully get a scholar ship for volleyball, and later on be able to play beach volleyball like you. :] THANK YOU so much!!!

Hi Misty,

I played 6v6 indoor volleyball quite extensively when I was in high school, and found the transition to sand 2v2 very difficult!

What’s the best piece of advice you can give to a player wanting to make the transition and be competitive?

Cheers & All the best,

Keni

Misty, I know that you are very famous and have gotten a lot of popularity in your sport. I have two questions.
1.- how do you feel about all your achievments that you´ve arrived?.
another questions is personal.
2.- Do you have a boyfriend or are you married?.

I have a question regarding the achilles tendon. I know you aren’t a doctor or anything but I thought that you may have an answer. For about the past couple of years or so every couple of months I get this stiffness in my achilles and it makes it so it hurts when I walk and also makes it diffucult to walk. I wanted to know why this happens and what it means really. If you know anything about it that would be helpful. Thank You so much for your time and effort.
p.s. You are the best ever!!!!!!
