The skies Thursday morning for the women’s beach volleyball final were gray and leaking. The air was heavy with foreboding, as if Mother Nature was ready to lend an assist in bringing down the indomitable American duo of Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh.
A sellout crowd of 12,000 braved a steady rain, donning pastel-colored plastic ponchos that made the stands look like rows of dyed Easter eggs, to cheer on the Chinese team of Jia Tian and Jie Wang. They were No. 1 on the program because of a quirk in the rules that awards the host country the top seed if it is in the top 6 , and No. 1 in their countrymen’s hearts, but a decided underdog to the reigning Olympic champions.May-Treanor and Walsh rained on the Chinese’s medal parade, winning their second gold medal and 108th consecutive match, 21-18, 21-18, at soggy Chaoyang Park. The contest was every bit as close as the final score indicated. The biggest lead by either team was three points. In the first set the score was tied 12 times.
In the second set, the Chinese duo’s last lead was 14-13 and they drew even with the Americans at 18 before succumbing. If these Games are the United States’ last stand against a steamrolling China, let the record show that late in the second week, two sunny Californians stood their ground, yielding not one inch in the face of the onrushing Chinese juggernaut.
